Printing on a Windows Network

When trying to configure my Mac to connect to a printer shared on a Windows network I came up against a few problems. I had previously got this working, but it seems that since upgrading to Tiger (I’m now on 10.4.3), it no longer works.

To handle seamless windows connectivity, as part of OS X Apple introduced Samba, the open source windows file and printer sharing software often deployed within Linux environments. As I Googled, to resolve my own issue, it seems that many people have had the same problem.
